BMI is weight (kg) ÷ height (m)² — nothing else goes into the number. It doesn't know your body fat percentage, muscle mass, waist size, or where fat is distributed. It's a screening ratio built for population-level statistics, not a per-person diagnostic — which is exactly where the "is BMI accurate" question usually goes wrong: the formula is doing precisely what it was designed to do, it's just being asked a question (how much of me is fat?) it was never built to answer.
Two people, identical BMI, different bodies
Because BMI only sees total mass, a bodybuilder and a sedentary person of the same height and weight get the exact same BMI — despite one carrying meaningfully more muscle and less fat than the other. This is the single most common real-world BMI failure: a muscular person reads as "overweight" on a scale that can't distinguish muscle from fat, and an older adult who's lost muscle but gained fat can read as "normal" while their actual health risk has risen.
BMI categories — Indian/Asian cutoffs, not the WHO default
Toolsda's BMI Calculator uses Asian-specific cutoffs rather than the WHO's original Western-derived ranges, because research on Asian populations shows health risk rising at lower BMI values:

The commonly-quoted "normal is up to 25" figure is the WHO's global standard, not the Asian one — worth knowing before comparing your number against advice written for a different reference population.
Where the calculator's "body fat %" actually comes from
To be transparent about what "estimated body fat" means here: the BMI Calculator's body-fat figure is not measured — it's calculated from your BMI, age, and gender using the Deurenberg formula (1.2 × BMI + 0.23 × age − 10.8 × gender − 5.4). That means it inherits the same blind spot as BMI itself: it adjusts for population-average trends (body fat rising with age, differing by gender), but it still can't see whether your particular mass is muscle or fat. It's a reasonable estimate for a typical body, not a substitute for a direct measurement.
What actually measures body fat, if BMI can't
- DEXA scan — the clinical gold standard, typically done at a hospital or diagnostic center.
- Bioelectrical impedance (BIA) — the smart-scale/handheld method; convenient, but sensitive to hydration level at the time of measurement.
- Skinfold calipers — measured by a trained person; accuracy depends heavily on technique.
None of these are needed for most people most of the time — BMI plus a look in the mirror and how your clothes fit remains a reasonable, free starting point. They matter specifically when BMI and your actual physique visibly disagree — an athlete "overweight" by BMI, or someone "normal" by BMI who's lost visible muscle.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can two people have the same BMI but very different body fat?
Yes — this is BMI's central limitation. A muscular athlete and a sedentary person of the same height and weight will show identical BMI, because the formula only knows total mass, not what that mass is made of. Their actual body fat percentages can differ by 15 points or more.
Why does Toolsda use 18.5–23 as normal BMI, not the WHO 18.5–24.9 range?
Research on Asian populations shows health risk (diabetes, cardiovascular disease) rising at lower BMI values than in the WHO's original Western-derived cutoffs — the same BMI carries more risk at a given number for South/East Asian bodies, on average. The tighter 18.5–23 "normal" band reflects that, at the cost of being stricter than the number many people grew up hearing.
If BMI can't measure body fat, how does the calculator show a body fat percentage?
By estimating it from your BMI, age, and gender using the Deurenberg formula — not by measuring it. That formula was built from population averages, so it's a reasonable estimate for a typical body, but it inherits BMI's own blind spot: it still can't see whether your mass is muscle or fat, it just adjusts for the fact that body fat tends to rise with age and differs by gender on average.
What actually measures body fat directly, if BMI and this formula are both estimates?
A DEXA scan is the clinical gold standard; bioelectrical impedance (BIA) scales are a common consumer approximation with their own accuracy caveats (hydration level shifts the reading). Both measure something BMI structurally cannot.
So is BMI actually useless?
No — it's a fast, free, reasonably reliable population-level screening number, which is exactly what it was designed to be. The failure mode is using it as a diagnosis for one specific person, especially an athlete, an older adult who's lost muscle, or anyone whose body composition is unusual for their weight.
