It exists so Meta's ad platform can later match a visit or purchase on that site back to the specific post or ad the click came from — the same job utm_* parameters do manually, done automatically by the platform itself.

Why it shows up even on links that aren't ads

fbclid is added on any outbound click from Facebook or Instagram — a friend's organic post, a page share, a comment link — not only paid ads. If the click happened inside the Facebook or Instagram app or website, the link Meta hands off to your browser has fbclid tacked on, regardless of who originally posted it or why.

Does removing it break the link?

No. Which page loads is determined entirely by the URL's path — everything before the ?. fbclid is read only by Meta's own attribution system on the receiving end (if the destination site has the Meta Pixel installed); the page itself doesn't need it to render. Stripping it changes nothing about what opens.

fbclid vs. a Facebook tracking cookie

These are different mechanisms. fbclid is plain text sitting in the URL — visible to anyone who looks at the link, and gone the moment it's cleaned. A tracking cookie (Meta's is called _fbp) is a separate file your browser stores locally after you land on a page that runs the Meta Pixel. Cleaning a URL's fbclid has no effect on cookies a site has already set — it only stops that one specific click from being attributed.
