UPI Transaction Limits Explained: Daily, Per-Transaction and App Limits

Your effective limit is usually the lowest applicable ceiling across the UPI category, bank account, app and risk controls.

The short answer

Normal UPI has an NPCI ceiling of up to ₹1 lakh per transaction. That is not a promise that every payment up to ₹1 lakh will work: the effective limit can be lower because of your bank, app, rolling 24-hour usage, transaction count, new-device controls or merchant category. Use the UPI Limit Checker as a reference, then confirm the current limit shown by your app or bank before a time-sensitive payment.

The four limits that can apply at once

  1. NPCI category ceiling. Normal person-to-person UPI and specified verified-merchant categories have different maximums.
  2. Issuing-bank limit. Your bank can set a lower per-payment or daily cap within the network ceiling.
  3. App and risk controls. An app may count transactions or apply security restrictions after registration, reinstall or device changes.
  4. Your recent usage. Rolling 24-hour totals and successful-transaction counts can block another payment even when that payment is small.

The safest rule is simple: your usable amount is the lowest applicable limit, not the largest number in a comparison table.

Common UPI ceilings at a glance

Normal UPIUp to ₹1 lakh per transactionA bank may set a lower limit.
Selected verified merchantsOften up to ₹5 lakh per transactionOnly listed categories and NPCI-verified merchants qualify.

NPCI's August 2025 circular expanded higher ceilings for specified verified-merchant categories while explicitly preserving member banks' discretion to set lower internal limits. Category and daily totals are detailed in the source circular and may be implemented differently by a bank.

Why a payment fails below the published limit

  • Your bank's per-transaction or daily limit is lower than the NPCI ceiling.
  • Your earlier payments already consumed a rolling 24-hour amount or count allowance.
  • The merchant is not verified or is not assigned to the higher-limit category you expected.
  • You recently added the account, reinstalled the app or changed devices and a temporary security cap applies.
  • The bank or UPI service is unavailable, the account balance is insufficient or the payment is held for risk review.

Do not keep retrying rapidly. Read the error, check recent successful payments, verify the bank's current table and contact official support if the reason remains unclear.

How to check your effective UPI limit

  1. Identify whether the payment is person-to-person or to a verified merchant.
  2. Check your bank's current UPI issuing limit for the linked account.
  3. Review the app's limit and recent successful transaction count.
  4. Look for a temporary new-account or new-device restriction.
  5. For a high-value merchant payment, confirm the verified indication and maximum shown before the PIN screen.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the normal UPI transaction limit?

NPCI states that normal UPI supports up to ₹1 lakh per transaction. Your bank or app may impose a lower per-transaction or rolling daily cap, and higher ceilings apply only to specified categories and verified merchants.

Is the UPI limit per app or per bank account?

Important limits can aggregate at the bank-account level across UPI apps. Apps may also apply their own transaction-count or risk controls. Switching apps does not reliably reset a bank-level limit.

Why did my UPI payment fail below ₹1 lakh?

Possible causes include a lower issuing-bank limit, a rolling 24-hour amount or count cap, a new-device restriction, a merchant-category mismatch, risk review, insufficient balance or a service outage.

Can verified merchants receive more than ₹1 lakh in one UPI payment?

Yes, specified verified-merchant categories can have higher NPCI ceilings. The merchant must be correctly categorized and verified, and the payer's bank may still enforce a lower internal limit.

What is the UPI limit for a new user?

Restrictions depend on the app, platform and registration event. Google Pay currently documents ₹5,000 for the first 24 hours on Android and ₹5,000 per 24 hours for the first three days on iOS after adding a bank account. Check the exact notice in your app and bank.
